Gaule

1. JOHN GAULE was born about 1841, probably in Waterford, Ireland. He married ELLEN McGRATH sometime in the 1860s. He died in Waterford in 1886. They had children:

 i. ANASTASIA J. GAULE, b. 1865 in Waterford, Ireland.  Emigrated to Massachusetts in 1887. Married in 1892 in Cambridge, Mass. to WALTER J. MURPHY of Kilkenny, Ireland. Anastasia died in 1934 in Somerville, Mass. You can read about their seven children on the Murphy page. Anastasia was my great-grandmother.

ii. Katie Gaule, b. about 1865 in Ireland. Married Thomas Fleming. Lived in Cambridge, MA. Died 1898 of tuberculosis.

iii. Anne Gaule, b. about 1865 in Waterford, Ireland. Emigrated to Massachusetts in the 1880s and married Charles Black of Cambridge, Mass. in 1892. (MVR 1841-1910).

iv. John Gaule, b. 1869 in Waterford, Ireland. Emigrated to Boston in 1893. Worked as a bricklayer. He married a woman named Mary and had sons named Theodore and John Jr.

v. Ellen Gaule, b. 1875 in Waterford, Ireland. Emigrated to Massachusetts in 1890. About 1903, after a failed first marriage, Ellen married widower William J. Kilday of Boston, who was fifteen years her senior and had four children from his first marriage. (Those 4 children were William, Charles, Bertha, and Vincent Kilday. Their mother’s name was Kate.) Ellen’s children, probably born in Boston, were:

a. Bernard Kilday, b. 1904 in Massachusetts (probably Boston); d. 1981 in Virginia. Buried Arlington National Cemetery. After his mother died, he was taken in by his aunt Anastasia Murphy in Cambridge. Joined US Marine Corps.
b. Ellen Kilday, b. 1909, Cambridge, MA.

v. Martin Gaule, b. 1877 in Ireland (probably Waterford). Emigrated to Massachusetts in 1890. He lived with his married sister Anastasia Murphy and her family in the censuses for at least twenty years. He worked at a meatpacking plant, probably at Squire’s Meat with Anastasia’s husband Walter.

  1. I am son of Donald Black and Irene Shifflet, who is son of Archibald Black (married Mildred Hymen of Paterson N.J.), who is son of Charles Black and Ellen McGrath. My father was raised in Arlington, Mass. with siblings Jean, Hellen and Bill. I wanted to thank you for this information as it has been very helpful in researching my family tree.
